String tension is one of the most overlooked parts of buying a badminton racket, yet it changes how the racket feels more than almost any other adjustment you can make. Here is how to think about it.
Lower tension = more power, bigger sweet spot
Strings at a lower tension (around 18–22 lbs) flex more on contact, acting like a trampoline that gives the shuttle extra pop with less swing effort. The sweet spot is also larger, which is more forgiving for off-centre hits — this makes lower tension a good match for beginners and casual players.
Higher tension = more control, smaller margin for error
Strings at a higher tension (24 lbs and above) flex less, giving experienced players sharper control and more precise placement, at the cost of needing better technique to generate the same power. Off-centre hits also feel less forgiving.
A simple starting point
- Beginners: 20–22 lbs
- Intermediate club players: 22–24 lbs
- Advanced / competitive players: 24–28 lbs, depending on frame and preference
Always stay within the tension range printed on the racket frame — stringing above the recommended maximum risks cracking it.
